The
stratification, or separation of temperature layers, in the ocean
is usually stable, but not always permanent, and can be disrupted
for various reasons. An upwelling can be one of these reasons.

With your partner complete the following tasks:
- Interview the following people to determine what instruments
might help you find the primary producers:
- Look at the following SST images to see how an upwelling is
seen along the New Jersey coast using images from satellites
– pay attention to how the water temperature along the
coast changes during the 7 days!

Answer the following questions in your
notebook:
- What happens to the water temperature over time at the LEO
site?
- Would the temperature change that happens at LEO be good for
phytoplankton? Why?
-
Would you expect to find fish in this area? Why?
